5 Tips to Designing PCBs for the Medical Industry

August 3, 2015

Medical PCBs are manufactured with certain guidelines. Reliable functioning of the PCBs is necessary as these devices are used in critical applications. The PCBs need to be able to work for prolonged periods and under high temperature conditions. They should also be unaffected by infrared and electromagnetic radiations. It goes without saying that medical PCBs should provide repeatable accurate action.

How to Design Medical PCBs to Perfection

Designing PCBs for the medical industry is no mean feat. Tight tolerances need to be followed to ensure reliable products. Some of the below mentioned tips should help you do just that:
  1. Ensure that your PCB is capable of producing a clean noise-free signal. Bifurcating analog and digital signals to ensure noise-free signals is imperative.
  2. Ground noise can be decreased with the help of ground impedance. This, too, will allow you to get a clean signal.
  3. In stack up PCBs, the crosstalk should be suppressed by clearly defining trace routes as well as incorporating the right boards at each layer.
  4. When working with high-speed PCBs, use short signal paths to ensure a stronger signal strength. This should be coupled with precise return paths. Correct BGA routing is extremely important in high-speed PCBs.
  5. A thermal profile can be created to save time during rapid prototyping.
When designing and producing medical PCBs, it is important to produce prototypes. Medical PCB prototypes are extremely important in terms of producing an accurately functioning product. Prototypes allow you to physically test the PCB and iron out any details that might have been overlooked during knowledge transfer, designing, or production. Hence, to produce a reliable product you can collaborate with a medical PCB manufacturer who is reliable and experienced.

Quick Contact

I approached Sierra after being referred to them from another PCB designer. What impressed me was that they were more than willing to take a complex PCB requirement. The PCB assembly they provided was small, lightweight, but provided the amount of power needed for our computer product. Great experience.
